Hi,
The fake side of Pencey is shown through the facade they create:
"You've probably seen the ads, anyway. They advertise in about a thousand magazines, always showing some hot-shot guy on horse jumping over a fence."
"I never even once saw a horse anywhere near the place."
This shows how they try and attract new students by using glamorous pictures and images, however, no such images exist.
"So I got the ax. They give guys the ax quite frequently at Pencey. It has a very good academic rating, Pency. It really does."
This shows that the school doesn't believe in supporting the individual if they do not enhance the image of the school.
They are only interested in how the school is perceived by others.
Holden is being quite sincere but this is only because they get rid of anybody failing.
They also create a false impression by the way the feed the students:
"It was supposed to be big deal, because they gave you steak. I'll bet a thousand bucks the reason they did that was becuse a lot of guys' parents came up to school on Sunday."
Holden believes they gve steak so that they would then tell their parents that they are given steak. However, this is only once a week, but the perents believe that the school is very posh etc.
Holden is shown to be not in harmony with his own society and slightly depressed when he discusses his relationship with the fencing team:
"The whole team ostracized me the whole way back on the train. It was pretty funny, in a way."
* the key idea is the way he reacts to being ostracized
* wouldn't expect him to find it funny
* shows he doesn't fully understand his situatuion
The exact spelling of son of a pregnant dog for the narration question is 'sonuvapregnant dog'.
Holden's emotional struggle is shown during his fight with Stradlater:
" I was so mad. I was practically bawling."
He oftens refers to himself as being mad
Bawling shows a child like state.
During his stay at the hotel we gain an insight into Holden's views on sex:
"I think if you don't really like a girl, you shouldn't horse around with her at ll, and if you do like her, then you're supposed to like her face, and if you liek her face, you ought to be careful about doing crumby stuff to it"
This is a catch 22 situation
Also shows Holden's desire to preserve people's innocence etc.
He also openly admits his difficulties in dealing with the idea of sex through Salinger's use of repetition:
"Sex is something I really don't understand."
"Sex is something I just don't understand."
When in the Hotel lobby Holden comments on the impurity of the Hotel:
"The whole lobby was empty. It smelled like fifty million dead cigars. It really did."
Salinger's use of hyperbole
The literal impurity of the air foreshadows the moral impurity that he will encounter during his stay.
Smoke = corruption.
The theme of phoniness is shown throught the character of Maurice:
"Old Maurice unbuttoned his whole uniform coat. All he had on underneath was a phony shirt collar, but no shirt or anything."
This shows Maurice's appearance is merely a facade
It is all a front as there is no depth.
He is creating a false impression of someboy who is smart etc.
Holden tries to cope wih his burgeoning depression by using acting out movie scenes to help him escape the harsh realities of his depression:
" Abou halfway to the bathroom, I sort of started pretending I had a bullet in my guts. Old Maurice had plugged me."
Mention how it is ironic that he uses movie scenes to help escape the reality of his life.
He uses them as he shows the bravdo that he would normally not be able to show.
Holden shows that he is struggling to hold his life together:
"I'd walk down a few floors - holding onto my guts, blood leaking all over the place - and then i'd ring the elevator bell."
Trying to hold the blood etc in refelcts that he is trying to stop the life seeping out of him.
Symbloic that he imagines Jane bandaging him up as he believes she symbolises the innocence of childhood.
Hope this helps.
