1. The writer compares the declining importance of parents to the increasing importance of friendship. Just as the margins are at the edges, so friends replace that one filled gap after a certain age. This shows that parents are not as connected to their children as they once were due to technological advancement. 2. The writer compares technology's influence over children to the warm embrace of a loved one. It pulls you in and once it has you that's the point of no return. Just as an embrace is a close, enfolding hug, so technology pulls you close and envelopes you. This shows that technology has too much influence over children. 3. The writer compares the comfort of technology to a warm sea calming and sedating you. Just as the sea is a vast expanse covering a large distance, the internet and other technological creations are large and expansive in knowledge. This shows that there are many things that help comfort you, perhaps too much on the internet. 4. The writer compares the tide of technology to a shore's tide. Just as the tide is a slow moving force reducing land masses and swallowing them, technology swallows us and steals our time like a real tide swallows land. This shows that too much time is donated to using the internet and technology. 5. The writer compares letting a stranger into your house to letting one onto your phone. Just as letting a stranger into your house is wrong, the writer tries to explain that we're too reliant on technology and we've let this 'stranger' in and now we regret it. This shows that people aren't safe enough with their uses of technology and we've all let the 'stranger' in. 6. The writer compares a desert island to not using technology. Just as a desert island is isolated from the rest of the world, not using technology feels like you can't connect with the rest of the world and that you're isolated from everyone and everything on Earth. This shows what serious impact a lack of technology has on a person or people.
