Hi, Your homework is to read pages 8 and 9 in your green close reading booklets and attempt questions 1-6 on page 10. This focuses on word choice. This means you will need to quote a particular word, comment on the connotations of your chosen word and then explain why it was an effective word to use in this context. Hope this helps.

Homework for Friday 25th August 2017 1. The writer uses the word 'mounds' to describe the quantity of bags there are. This suggests there are many bags of rubbish on the streets. 2. The writer uses the words 'flies' and 'stench' to describe the condition of the rubbish dump. This suggests the rotting junk in the dump produces a bad smell. 3. The writer uses the word 'engineers' to describe Gomez's ability to create the instruments. This suggests he is skilled and is a master at his craft. 4. The writer uses the words 'poverty' and 'slums' to describe the gancheros' living conditions. This suggests that the gancheros are poor and so cannot afford real instruments for their children. 5. The writer uses the word 'struggle' to describe the parents' attitudes towards their children playing music. This suggests the parents don't see any advantages by their children playing music. 6. The writer uses the words 'clutching', 'content' and 'treasure ' to describe Ada and Noelia's feelings towards their recycled instruments. This suggests they have a great appreciation to what little they have.

Hi Luke,
For mounds I would also suggest piles and mountains/ hills.
Slums = poverty, dirty and over crowded.
Struggle = challenge and great difficulty.
Hope this helps.
