Example q:
Religion/Poverty/Escape/Loss is an important theme in the play.
With close reference to this extract and elsewhere in the play, show how this theme is explored.
Example Answe:
By referring to this extract and elsewhere in the play, explain how the character of Alec develops and changes as he grows older
Alec has changed throughout the play because he changes roles with his dad and he is not as close to him anymore. In the past he didn’t make comments about his dad but now he tells him exactly what he thinks.
For example in this part he makes a comment about his dad’s drinking
‘So ye go an get bevied an forget about it all.’
This shows that he’s not impressed with his dad’s drinking and criticises it.
At the start of the play he really respects his dad and is proud of him.
‘Did l ever show ye ma da’s sailing tools?’
This shows that he wants to show off that his dad is good at things. He doesn’t show this later in the play.
At the end of the play Alec shows that he is disappointed in his dad. In the past he might not have told him. His dad tells him he meant to fix up a boat for Alec and then Alec says he just never did. This shows that he wants his dad to feel guilty for not being the best dad he could be.
