Hey folks,
Me again!
I have sent Mr Macfarlane the ideas for paragraphs 5, 6 and the conclusion of your AFTA essay but I thought I would copy them here too in case you have to complete your essay over the holidays (if not finished this week):
Paragraph 5 - why the ending of the novel is unexpected.
Setting: describe their peaceful life in Switzerland happy even "cheerful rain" (mention only if you haven't already) - and mention the security and comfort brought by the hills and snow. Highlight the fact that the couple seem to be genuinely in love and content at this point - we feel as though they are going to have a 'happy ending'. Spend time using quotations which show that the reader actually begins to believe their life in Switzerland will be one of happiness and ease, away from the destruction of WW1.
Paragraph 6 - why the ending was unexpected.
Nature: unexpected irony of death at hands of nature NOT WAR when we know they are safely away from the front which is where the bulk of people are losing their lives at this time.
Also cruelty of nature to kill the baby in what should be one of the most normal things for women to naturally achieve. Unexpected that CB also has to die - readers feel that the baby was something they hadn't created a strong attachment too but FH feels very strongly about CB now which is what makes the last lines of the novel so sad. We knew he wouldn't die (as he is the narrator) and after the baby dies it seems almost unnecessary for CB to die too. From here on we know that FH's hopes are destroyed as he will try to piece his life back together.
Conclusion: remember to make it almost mirror your introduction. For example - title, author, setting themes and refer to strong points made in the body of your essay which helps you answer the question. Essay question again is 'To what extent is the ending of A Farewell to Arms expected?' and you will want to argue that we mostly expected it (and why) but that it was also a little unexpected (and why).
Remember - any questions then ask away.
