S3 Shawshank Redemption Essay Abigail Robinson
Frank Derabont's making of the flim the Shawshank Redemption is about a man ' Andy Dufranse', an innocent human being who has had allegations been made towards him that he had horrifically killed his wife and her other lover who she recently was having an affair with while still in her marriage. The prison the '' Shawshank '', is set in an daunting and gloomy place that you would not want to find yourself to count this as your home.
Outside the prison is a very spacious place, which makes you feel free to do as you desire. As soon as you step into the Shawshank prison due to committing a crime, there is no way out until you commit to the sentence you have been given. The walls that are inside the prison are a dull dark grey with very little amount of light appearing through the windows, which is to be shown as there is barely enough hope towards the prison.
As the cameras pans round the entire prison, you see that there are guards walking around the grounds with guns in their hands, to ensure the prisoners that they are watching every move that they take. When Andy Dufranse enters the grounds of the Shawshank in a Police Van, the director uses a crane shot to certify that the prison is secure. Derabont makes the prison seem intimidating by the use of sound for example, the shouts of the guards are to confirm that the prisoners are under strict conditions and should listen to ensure they do not get into any sort of trouble. Sad music is played before Andy Dufranse enters the prison this confirms that it may be the last time Dufranse ever feels free.
Andy Dufranse and the other prisoners enters a small dark room inside of the prison, where they are introduced to the warden. The lighting in this scene is only to be shown towards the warden, as a spotlight to suggest that he is the dominant figure. The yellow line acts as a symbol of the warden as he is the most powerful individual. The static camera indicates that the prisoners should feel anxious and fearful about the future in the prison. The camera also indicates that the warden has a higher authority over the prisoners, this is shown through the height of the camera looking down on the prisoners while the warden is speaking. The light source is very little, therefore it is symbolising that hope is gone. The warden comes across as a very mysterious character and moves suspiciously around the prison.
Brooks, another prisoner that has been in the Shawshank for over twenty years, was institulionalised for many years and by the time he has been set free to the open world he does not know what to do with himself. Brooks and his bird Jake have been there for each one another and when it is time to set him free, he is upset that it is time to move forward. While Jake has been set free into the wild, Brooks realises that Jake will not survive in the wild as he cannot remember how to live as a bird and he also realises that he has lived the majority of his life in jail as a consequence he knows he will not survive. When Brooks leaves the prison, the camera focuses on Brooks back to suggest that he does not want to leave.
Andy Dufranse overhears the prison officers talking about a situation that has occurred in one of their lives, which involves money and how he does not want to lose his savings through finances. Dufranse who had been occupied as a banker before this occurrence happened, he had dealt with this situation before. Therefore when he tries to help the officer by telling him what he can do, the prison officer immediately assumes that he is telling him what to do or worst lying to him. The officer finally realized that Andy Dufranse had told him the right thing to do which regarded to this circumstance, in exchange he gives him and his workmates some ' cold studs '. Andy had chosen to help the officer to feel human again, similar to how he used to have felt outside of the prison. He did not want to feel like a prisoner anymore or to be treated as one for that matter, Dufranse also felt like he had a purpose in his life ; he wanted to help the other prisoners by making them remember their value and dignity as human beings which has sadly been forgotton.
The music scene is an exceedingly relaxing scene for the watcher, which is been shown as loud and operamatic for the briefest of moments the prisoners feel free. At the start when Andy Dufranse first recalls hearing the music from one of the offices, the thought comes to his mind that he could give a favour to each and everyone of the prisoners by making them feel free once more.
The music that is been played during this scene symbolises hope, also Dufranse plays the music through the loudspeaker to the prisoners to give them a reminder of the outside life and how they will experience this once again when their sentence is over. Red, a man that Dufranse had became close too in a short period of time sees hope as a dangerous emotion. Red does not want to give up on his life as he does not want to become like Brooks. It is only by giving Red what he truly desires as he can live in the world who he had never forgotten with peace and happiness.
