Hi folks,
Some notes from today's discussion (in case you were at the assembly and missed it):
Class and Society in 1912 Britain
1. Correct posture is expected in first class society 2. The appropriate dress code is very important 3. There are polite gestures which are acceptable 4. In polite society people can be referred to as Mr/Miss/Madame etc. 5. Wealthy society is about who you know 6. Women are discussed as objects 7. The shallow behaviour of the rich classes 8. Wealthy society had distaste for the lower classes 9. Certain manners must be observed at the table 10. Marriage was often connected to business, rather than love 11. An ideal is put forth that being poor means that you are free from social conventions, but the reality is very different 12. An after dinner convention was for the men to have a smoke and a brandy. Ladies and lower classes were excluded from this. 13. Assumption that the lower classes can’t understand politics or business 14. Rich and poor can’t have relationships!
Just a reminder - War Photographer stories due on Thursday (27th). Any questions - post!
