Our Day out - Essay Taylor Hendry
3B3
‘Our Day out’ by Willy Russell is a play about a trip for a third year progress class. The Two main characters are Mr Briggs and Mrs Kay who are two teachers, but they are nothing alike. Mr Briggs is Strict and gives the children a hard time, but on the other side Mrs Kay is easy going and lets the kids away with everything these two teachers are contrasted throughout the play.
Willy Russell shows us the difference between the two teachers when they give their rules to the class. Mrs Kay says ‘ We want everyone to enjoy themselves. That’s the only rule we have today. Think of your selves but think of others as well’. The good thing about this rule is that she wants them to enjoy there selves and wants them to forget about their life at home.
The bad thing about this rule is that she wants them to think about their selves first so it says to them they should just think about there selves before others. This leads to the children getting into trouble later on in the play.
Mr Briggs also has rules for the children too. “But a lot of you haven’t been on a school trip before so you won’t know how to enjoy your selves. So I’ll tell you.” The good thing about his rule is that he is teaching them how to behave and has warded it out in a positive manner.
The bad thing about his rule is he wants them to behave very well or they will get sent back.
The best rule is Mr Briggs rule because he may seem he is coming down hard on the kids but he dose expects the to behave appropriately. He is also strict on the children so he is trying to teach them how to be well behaved, outside of school.
The rules are put to the test when the class visit the sweet shop. When the kids arrive at the shop they cause trouble and mayhem. All the Children do is steal and cause a lot of trouble to the shop assistants. Before the kids get into the shop they all run and cause mayhem. Mrs Kay reacts like it’s okay and lets the kids carry on doing, but on the other hand Mr Briggs acts completely different. Mr Briggs reacts angrily and shouts at the kids.
Mr Briggs yells ‘STOP’! SLATER, WALK…. WALK! YOU BOY… COME HERE. NOW STOP. ALL OF YOU STOP!
When Mr Briggs dose this its not effective because the kids ignore him and carry on causing trouble.
In a way, Mrs Kay’s rule worked because they thought of their selves when they were stealing. On the other hand Mr Briggs rule did not work because the kids just kept running and ignoring him. Mr Briggs is right not to trust the class because they are living up to his expectation
When the pupils go to the castle, the teachers have an argument about what the trip is really about. Mrs Kay try’s to get through to Mr Briggs by saying it’s a trip for the kids for them to have fun. Mrs Kay says “do you really think you could educate these kids? Because you’re a fool if you do.”
She thinks there is no help for the kids she thinks it’s too late for the them, so they should just enjoy themselves on the trip. After that comment from Mrs Kay, Mr Briggs replies “Well that’s a fine attitude for a member if the teaching profession to have.” Mr Briggs thinks the trip is about learning and educating the kids.”
An example of Briggs helping the children is when he is showing them round the castle and telling them facts about the castle. He dose not simplify his language and treats the pupils maturely.
Mr Briggs, in my mind has the best attitude because he speaks to them like they are normal human beings when he is not shouting at them. He also has no favourites so he treats the children all the equally.
In the scene on the cliff we see Mr Briggs being very successful in helping Carol down to safety.
Briggs was shouting at carol to start with to get her down because that was the best way to get through to people, but it didn’t work on carol.
This way didn’t work because he’s not respecting carol so she dose not respect him. When he calms down he becomes more like Kay, nice and gentle. He starts to think yelling is not the best way to get through to people.
This is successful because he treats her like a human so she treats him like one too.
In conclusion, a combination of the two teachers would be the best for the children. Mrs Kay is patronising and teaches in a loving motherly way. Mr Briggs is firm but fare but he comes down hard on the kids but is fare
