Plan for missing bits -
Intro -
- 'Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom'
- directed by Steven Spielberg
- Harrison Ford stars as Jones
- Examining in what ways Jones is made out to be a stereotypical action hero. - mention - Costume, use of camera, soundtrack and narrative roles.
1 -
P - The first appearance of Jones in the film is made to stand out for the audience
- so they know he is hero
E- Costume of Jones - all white
Costume of villains - all black
E - Explain the connotations of the colours - White - honest / pure. Black - evil, sinister
- Explain why the viewer then wants to support Jones.
2-
P - However, Jones' regular costume is different in many ways to the one he wears in his first appearance.
E- - List - Hat, brown jacket, grey shirt, whip.
E- Explain - Hat - iconic and easily recognisable. Grey shirt - morally grey - explain the connotations of the colour, Whip - self defence, not violent. - Mention why this makes him heroic.
3-
P - At one point in the movie, Jones is brainwashed by the Thuggee and his costume changes.
E- List - lost shirt, red band, and scar. Also face half in shadow.
E- Red band - explain connotations of the colour red (violent etc.)
- No shirt - primitive
- No hat - not easily recognised, one of the tribe
- Scar - he is physically and mentally damaged
- Shadow - suggests something sinister.
4-
P - The use of camera is also important in showing Jones as a stereotypical hero.
E- Mention Spielberg commonly using low-angle shots to frame Jones
E- Effect of this - Superior, strong, audience looks up to him, suggests ideas of power, and dominance.
- Also a genre convention.
5 -
P - Another important aspect that Spielberg uses to make Jones seem heroic is in the use of the score.
- Mention 'Raiders' March' used often when action onscreen.
E- Mention - non-diegetic, major key, full orchestra, upbeat tempo, strong percussion, led by a trumpet.
E - Effect - attracts audience attention, memorable, trumpet stands out as powerful, rhythm creates associations with strength, marching. Major key - positive, makes audience think positively about Jones.
6-
P - Key to Jones appearing as a hero are his relationships with two other characters - Short Round and Willy Scott.
E- Explain that they take specific narrative roles.
Willy Scott - 'damsel in distress' / love interest
Short Round - sidekick / comic relief.
E - Scott - there to be saved by Jones, seen as weaker, makes him stronger. Also shows there is an attractive, desirable element to Jones.
Short Round - protected by Jones - shows he cares for children. His humour also makes Jones seem more serious.
7 -
P - However, it can be argued that there are aspects of Jones' character that are not typical to heroes.
E- Fear of snakes, inability to solve problems except through luck, theif.
E- Why wouldn't the audience like a 'perfect' hero?
Also - weakness (snakes) is a convention of other heroes. Makes him actually seem more like one?
CONCLUSION -
In conclusion it is clear to see that Indiana Jones stands out as the hero in the film.
- Mention what you have examined.
Ultimately, Jones comes across as .......... (FINISH YOURSELF!)
GOOD LUCK - Remember, due on Monday 21st!
