hey mrs kendall
can you please print this off for me? thanx!
Romeo and Juliet.
I have studied the 1996 Shakespearean film Romeo and Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann. I am going to write about the Ballroom scene and Marcutio’s Death scene. I have chosen these two scenes because I feel that they tell very different sides of the very same story.
The film is about two families, the Capulet’s and the Montague’s, that brawled with each other, but Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet were just children and so are not involved, so they never met. When Romeo and Juliet finally meet its love at first sight. They first meet at the party; they meet in a toilet, but can’t introduce themselves because there is a grand fish tank separating the ladies and the gentlemen’s toilet.
Juliet tries to escape her mother, (Lady Capulet) her nanny (Nurse) and Paris, for Lady Capulet and Nurse are trying to get Paris and Juliet together. But once Juliet finds what she’s been looking for, (Romeo) her heart is set on getting him.
When Marcutio dies it is a tragedy, he curses both the Capulets and the Montagues houses
“A PLAGUE ON BOTH YOUR HOUSES"
In the Ballroom scene the camera angles focus on the main characters and the characters they are dressed up as, to show their true colours. For example Juliet is an Angel which shows us that she is truthful and loyal, Romeo us a Knight which shows us that he believes in justice. Lord and Lady Capulet are dressed up as Seizar and Cleopatra, to show their high power to everyone else. Paris as an Astronaut, this makes him look like he is out this world, mentally. Tybalt is a Devil, king of all evil, with his two kinsmen, who are dressed as Skeletons. And Marcutio is dressed as a Transsexual because he is friends with both the Capulet’s and Marcutio’s, and doesn’t know which he is to choose.
In the film Luhrmann has updated Romeo and Juliet by replacing swords, daggers and rapiers; with guns that are named after each of these. As if they were the type of gun.
In the Ballroom scene when Romeo has taken the drugs the music moves faster, so he goes to the toilets and splashes water on his face to clear his head. This is when he meets Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are made for each other in my opinion. They love each other even though they are ment to hate each other.
“My only love sprang from my only hate.”
I would have to say that my favourite scene is the Ballroom scene, because it shows all the people and their true colours and it is when Romeo and Juliet first meet. The best scene I would have to say is Marcutio’s Death because it has really good close-ups of the characters, and shows the emotions of the characters in their faces.
Finally when Juliet finds a way to be with Romeo, he thinks what everyone else thinks-that she is dead, but this is a con she is really just asleep. But because Romeo thinks she is dead he kills himself to be forever with Juliet. Finally she wakes and finds that she is alone and so dies for him, again.
