TPEER - Development of Conflict/Rising Action
TOPIC SENTENCE The conflict between Eddie and Rodolpho develops at an incredible rate.
POINT Eddie begins to lose control of his family and his own emotions as the relationship between Catherine and Rodolpho blossoms. In order to find a solution, he visits the neighbourhood lawyer, Alfieri.
EVIDENCE Alfieri: “When the law is wrong it's because it's unnatural, but in this case it is natural and a river will drown you if you buck it now.”
EXPLANATION Here, Alfieri tries to explain to Eddie that Rodolpho and Catherine’s love for one another is completely normal and within the law. Miller uses the river as a metaphor for the law, meaning that if Eddie acts against what is right, he will die. However as already suggested, Eddie’s stubborn nature gets the better of him, resulting in him acting contrary to this advice and fall into Ancient Greek dramatic role of “Hypokrites”.
REFER TO QUESTION This scene is effective in building tension as it encapsulates Eddie’s flaws and develops the growing conflict between him and Rodolpho.

Hi all,
Niamh - yes, the drama section.
Millie - Foreshadowing is when something is suggested or hinted at which later becomes important. Conflict is foreshadowed by Alfieri by stating "Family Squabbles"
Mark - They are both part of the same paper. It's called Critical Reading. Look for Duffy in the Scottish text section then essay questions near the back and select one from the Drama part. I recommend 50 mins to write your essay and 40 mins for the poetry.
Beat of luck everyone!

Essay Skills: A View from the Bridge
Essay Question – Ending Complete the paragraph by providing evidence, writing an explanation and referring to the question. Before the electrifying ending, there are a series of events that build tension and add to the intensity of the play’s finale. One such event is when a drunken and enraged Eddie comes home at Christmas to find his niece and Rodolfo alone. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Essay Question: Turning Point Write a topic sentence, point and evidence for this paragraph.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Miller’s short, stunted sentences help to convey Eddie’s nervousness as he struggles to speak, knowing that with every word he is betraying his family and the Italian community of Red Hook. This decision marks a turning point in the play as it results in Marco seeking revenge and Eddie’s tragic death in front of the neighbourhood. Essay Question – Conflict Complete the paragraph by providing evidence, writing an explanation and referring to the question. As the play progresses, friction between Eddie and Rodolfo grows. Enraged by Rodolfo’s actions and personality, Eddie seeks advice from the neighbourhood lawyer, Alfieri. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Essay Question: Flawed Character Provide evidence and write an explanation and refer to the question.
Another of Eddie Carbone’s many flaws is his stubborn nature. Eddie’s irreversible perception of how a man should behave is incredibly stereotypical and the exact opposite of how Rodolfo is depicted.

Do you get marked down for spelling in the critical essay? And is there anything else they take marks off for?

Anytime Ruairidh.
Jonathan, you can get marked down on spelling, expression, punctuation, structure, lack of depth, mistakes relating to the text, not answering the Question...
Many things!

Hi Mr Waddell Me and Rebecca were wondering for the critical essay, flawed characters, will the question ask for the audience to give sympathy or no sympathy?
