Hey folks, just to let you know that Thursday is actually a Monday timetable, so I'm going to switch round the lessons for the 12/13th so you don't have two periods of Close Reading in a row and then end up hating me and becoming bitter towards English.
Hurrah!

Hi Karen,
Do you mean by trying to conform to society's ideals by having sex. He believes it is the way to make the transition from the innocence of childhood to the adult world.
Hope this helps. ;D

Hi Karen,
For a key scene essay I would look for you to mention how it is against his principles which suggests that he is trying to fit in. This is when he is speaking with Maurice and you also need to mention that he tries to appear older than he is by talking all suave and lying about his age and then you have the fact that she depresses him due to her age as she is still a child but her innocence has been corrupted by her entering the adult world. You can also mention how the smell of cigar smoke in the lobby is significant. Thee literal impurity of the air foreshadows the moral impurity he will soon encounter. Then you explain that he is unable to go through with it as he is still too young and not ready to make the transition into the adult world. He lies about his operation on his "clavichord" which is a musical instrument and his decision to talk highlights his desire for company however it is again like most of the relationships he tries to form in the novel, short term. He does not seek to talk to those that can help him most. This scene highlights his two worlds colliding as up until now he has been able to separate his fantasy world of purity and innocence from the harsh reality of the adult world. This is the turning point / key scene as it marks his last attempt to enter the adult world. It is also another example of him self-harming as there is no way this encounter will help his already fragile mental state and as a a result his mental decline speeds up from this moment onwards.
Hope this helps. ;D

Hi Karen,
It depends on how the question is phrased. You will probably have to provide context to the scene. By that I mean what has brought him to this scene. Then you have to look at what happens as a result of this event. In chapter 14 he tries to cleanse himself of the sin he believes he nearly committed by trying to pray and speaking to Allie. How does this speed up his decline and build up to the scene at the carousel.
Hope this helps. ;D
