Hi folks, We have finished Act One of 'An Inspector Calls' and you have met all of the characters. Who do you think - at this point - is most responsible for the death of Eva Smith? Provide reasons for your answer.Post your answer by Monday 31st August as we will look at this in class. Mrs K

At this point I think Sheila is most responsible because Eva Smith had already lost one job so losing another one must have made her think that she wasn't any good at working anywhere. It wasn't even for a good reason, just because Sheila was jelous of her for looking better in a dress. Overall it is because of losing her previous job which made it even worse. Jack Ambrose

I agree that Sheila was most responsible because she put Eva Smith out of a job that she had enjoyed and I believe that is the main reason Eva commited suicide, just because Eva had looked better in a dress. SANDY SHARKIE

In my opinion, I think that -at this point in the book- Arthur Birling should be blamed for the death of Eva Smith, because if he hadn't fired her in the first place then she would never have gone down that path and would still be earning money and alive.

Arthur started it all. And she didn't want that much of a raise! It's a capitalist allegory!

Yeah, but come on, they're just cheap labour - whatever drives the price down!

at the moment, they all seem to be more or less equally responsible. although arthur birling devastated her by firing her, he had a logical reason. ...actually, sheila may be more responsible because she also got eva fired from a much needed job for the most trivial of reasons. can gregory (?) be said to be in it so far? cause although the birlings have heavily messed up her career, he seems to have messed somewhat with her love life, which could be worse. (we shall have to wait and see.)

I feel by this point all contributed equally, Arthur, firing Eva for her rebellious attitude over higher pay for workers and Sheila for putting in a complaint and getting her fired and we also hear something of Gerald and Eva seeing each other for a brief period perhaps, she felt her life was taking a change for the better only for him to leave her. Perhaps this is what finally pushed her over the edge, the feeling of being unloved and alone.

i think that mr birling is most responsible for eva smiths death because he sacked her and took away her only means of income. she only wanted a couple more shillings and as he said she was a good worker. Fergus! !!!

I think that mr birling is responsible for Eva's suicide because he was the person to fire her from her first job and it was after that things got worse for her.

Thanks to all you new posters - seems Sheila and Birling are sharing the blame just now!
