hi miss here is my essay
Stone Cold Essay
Stone cold is a novel written by Robert Swindells that has themes such as Injustice, murder and homelessness we see this through the characters of Link and Shelter. Their voices are juxtaposed throughout the novel, creating contrasts between the two and helping us to understand exactly how Swindells has characterised them.
In the beginning of the novel Link’s character seemed quite young and his speech is quite slangy he uses words like “Hang about and I’ll tell you the story of my fascinating life”. Robert Swindells makes Link (his good character)quite young so we the readers will relate to him and feel sorry for him.
In the beginning of the novel we also meet Shelter (the bad character) and he introduces himself by saying “Shelter. Yes. I like it”. This is different to Link because Link’s language is quite slangy and military like and a quote of this is “well get fell in, my lucky lads” I think Robert Swindells makes his evil character so odd because he wants us to relate to Link more and like him more than Shelter so we will think what is happening to Link is so unfair.
In the beginning of the novel we find Link as quite a positive out look and has a lot of faith in people but we can see this changes throughout the novel. By the middle of the novel Link gets taught about homelessness and a new friend call Ginger teaches him how to survive on the streets. Link learns about the publics reaction and a quote from the book on this is “I don’t give a toss what you haven’t got, son.” Swindells makes us feel sorry for homeless people by giving a young easy to relate to good character so we feel more for him rather than an odd evil, sycophantic character.
In the beginning of the novel we were told to believe that Shelter was just odd and he seemed to be quite a good character and his name sounded quite welcoming but as we moved on through the novel he became quite evil and a ouote from the novel is “One cheeky little bugger actually asked me for change. ‘Change? I’d change you , my lad, if I had you in khaki for six weeks” Swindells again makes us feel sorry for the homeless by making us see how sad Shelter is towards the homeless by not giving them change and seeing him murder a few homeless people.
At the end of the novel Link has lost practially lost everyone he cares about because Ginger is murdered and he has no one else. A quote from the last chapter about what he will do next is “In the mean time, though, I’m not sure what I’ll do … I could leave London altogether.” I think there is no hope for him because he won’t go home to him family and he hasn’t made an easy choice about what he will do next.
In the end of the novel Shelter gets arrested by the police and justice is served, in his last daily routine order and a quote from this is “Ha ha ha! That’s the sound of Shelter having the last laugh…the enemy has been attacked in strenth and been repulsed.” we can not sympathise with this because he is talking about how he has killed Ginger and all that is left is Link and this shows us he is becoming increasingly mad. Robert Swindells shows us that homeless people are cleverer and better than Shelter because at the end of the novel Link stops Shelter by fighting with him until the police get to Shelter home to arrest him. In conclusion Swindells explores the theme of homelessness very effectively in his novel because he shows us how hard everyday life is on the streets and shows us how cruel people can be towards the homeless. The character I identified the most is Link because he is the character that we can relate to the most. The novel made me feel quite sorry for the homeless people of the world and it made me want to help them somehow, the moment that effected me the most in the novel is when Link had to leave home because of Vince and this effected me because I felt so sorry for Link because his whole world seemed to have been torn apart because of him and he had to leave his family behind forever.

Thank you Philip!
For those of you doing homework this weekend for your Mid-Term Break essay, post any questions here!
Paragraph 3 focuses on assonance, a sound technique used to draw your attention to specific words, or to make them sound a certain way for effect.
You should be able to find an example of assonance in the first stanza.
Think about why the poet has chosen to draw attention to these words.
This should- I hope- help with your homework. If you're having trouble let us know! ;D

Healthy eating in Scotland essay By Philip Robertson 12/02/10
In my class I’ve been watching a TV program called Jamie Oliver’s school dinners which was filmed on channel 4 in 2005. In this program Jamie Oliver tried to change the unhealthy food which school children in primary and secondary schools buy in their canteen. In my essay I will talk about the strategies Jamie used to get kids to eat more healthy. When my class watched this program I thought Jamie succeeded in his mission to get kids to eat more healthy and I also enjoyed watching this program and it helped me get an Insight on what kinds of unhealthy foods people eat in public schools.
Obesity in Britain is becoming more and more of a concern but it is not only in school kids that obesity is a problem because the numbers of obese adults is increasing dramatically because 25% of adults in Britain are classed as obese. But the school kids of Britain their numbers are 10% of all six year olds 15% of all 15 year olds are classed as obese. I believe that the rise in numbers of obese kids and adults are due to much watching TV, increase in playing computer games, not enough active playing outdoors, not enough places to play, ride bikes and go to sport activities. Even though those examples many be possible reasons for obesity I also think unhealthy eating plays a bid roll in Britain problems with obesity.
In kidBrooke high school, before Jamie Oliver came, the school canteen was serving a massive proportion of junk food. On the menu in this high school their was fish fingers, chicken nuggets, hamburgers, chips and pizza and on this menu their was not a single bit of fresh food but everything was just reheated and the fat content of the food was very high, my evidence was 19.8% fat in burgers from Bernard Matthews, 21.2% fat in turkey twizzlers and this amount was 10% more than the maximum recommended amount of processed meats. Jamie was horrified when he asked some dieticians what this was doing to there physical and mental health and found that it wasn’t good.
A poor diet has a negative effect on children’s health. Some of the effects of a poor diet are poor concentration, hyperactivity and constipation. Jamie talked to Ruth Ash , a nutritionist looked at one child from kidbroke and she found virtually no vitamin C in his diet which is important for a healthy immune system she also found that the food only had a third of the iron needed for children’s development and this affects concentration. A dietician from Durham hospital said that they had to run constipation clinics because some kids hadn’t been to the toilet In 6 weeks because of lack of fruit and fibre in their diet. All the illnesses we’ve seen all linked back to the food we feed to kids in schools.
Children can be addicted and fixed in their eating habits. Some kids can be unfamiliar with fresh fruit and vegetables some didn’t even know what rhubarb and asparagus were and some kids were less inclined to try some new food and were to familiar to TV adverts and logos such as pizza hut and MacDonald’s. The kids at the school were frantic at the very thought of taking away their chocolate, chips and turkey twizzilers and some kids cried and some went to the chippie and to other places for their junk food.
During Jamie’s time at the schools he band junk food and the kids always chose junk food over any other types of food. Jamie also tried hiding vegetables in home made foods such as the pizza he made and different sauces he made for other things. Finally he also tried getting the kids involved in cooking at the school and he ran special groups to tempt the less adventurous kids by getting them to make salad dressing and cooking roast chicken for themselves and their friends.
In conclusion changing eating habits of kid can be successful but they need to try and stop selling so much junk food in schools and more fresh fruit and veg. they also need to try and get parents involved and local authorities to make this a successful mission. By watching that program it showed me that with persistence and perseverance you can change children’s lives for the better just like Jamie Oliver did with Kidbrooke high school.

Hi miss heres my essay,
In class we have watched a television programme called ‘Jamie Olivers’s School Dinners’ which was broadcasted in 2005 on channel 4. The show is about Jamies attemp to change childrens eating habits through what they buy at they school canteen. This essay will discuss some of the strategies Jamie tries to get children eating more healthily. I think Jamie succedded in his mission as he acheived his aim and i enjoyed watching the programme.
Obesity in adults is a problem, ‘ Nearly 25% of adults in Britain are currently classed as obese.’ Obesity in children is also a problem, ‘ Nearly 10% of all six year olds and 15% of 15 year olds are classed as obese’. Possible reasons for thr cause in rise of people gaining weight could be, watching too much tv and lack of exercise. Most importantly it is what we eat that directly affects our weight.
In Kidbrooke High School, before Jamie Oliver came, the school canteen was serving massive proportions of junk food. On the menu was foods like, fish fingers, chicken nuggets, hamburgers and chips. All this food is reheated none of it is fresh food. The fat content in this reheated food is very high and not good for the children. ‘ Burgers from Bernard Matthews are 19.8% fat. Turkey Twizzlers contain 21.2% fat which is more than the 20% maximum food content recommended for processed meats under Scottish guidelines. Jamie was horrified by this and asked health experts what effect eating all this junk food would do to the childrens mental and physical well being.
A poor diet has a negative affect on children’s health. Poor concentration, hyperactivity and constipation are some health problems children experience if they dont eat a healthy balanced diet. Ruth Ash a nutritionist in episode one of the programme examined the food a student from Kidbroke High eats. She found out that there was no Vitamin C which is an important key for keeping a healthy immune system. The food content contained only 1/3 of iron needed for childrens develpment. The iron levels affect a childs concentration. The dietician from Durham hospital said that they have to run constipation clinics for primary school children who have not been to the toilet for up to six weeks due to the lack of fruit and fibre in their diet, all the illnesses we go through as a nation are coming back into what children are getting fed.
Children can be addicted and fixed in their eating habits. Some children are unfamiliar with fresh fruit and vegetables, dont know what rhubarb asparagus is. Children will be less inclined to try something new if they do not know what it is they are trying. All kids are too familiar with Mc Donald’s, Pizza Hut because off advertising and logos. The thought of taking away chocolate, chips, Turkey Twizzlers made children so upset they cried, boycotted the canteen or got their friends to go to the local chippie or buy junk food for them. Some parents even passed burgers through the school fence so their kids did not do without.
Some of jamies strategies inclueded.. Banning junk food, the children would always choose junk food over any other food that was available. Hiding vegetables, Jamie used to put seven types off vegetables in pasta sauces so the children would be eating vegetables and not knowing it. Getting children involved in cooking, Jamie ran special groups to tempt the resistant kids by getting them to make a salad dressing and roast chicken for there friends. Jamie also showed the children what chicken nuggets were really made of. The children were disgusted when they saw gristle, chicken fat and cups of additive powder going into the mix. Jamie also involved songs, stickers, projects and dressing up to win over the kids.
In conclusion changing eating habits can be succesful, but to make this happen you need to have a lot of strategies to win over the kids. They need to ban junk food in schools and get the kids eating the fresh food which is better and healthier for them, you need to get parents, schools and government must be on board to make the programme a success. Jamie has proven with persistance and perseverance that you can change childrens eating habits for the better.

Hey miss here is my essay,
In class I have watched a television programme called ‘Jamie Olivers’ School Dinners’ which was shown on channel 4 in 2005. The show is about Jamie’s effort to change childrens eating habits through what they buy at their school canteen. This essay will show some of the strategies Jamie has emplied to get children eating more healthily. I think Jamie succeeded in his mission as he has acheived his aim and the program was enjoyable to watch.
Obesity in adults is a big problem, Nearly 25% of adults in Britain are currently classed as obese. Obesity in children is an even bigger problem, Nearly 10% of all six year olds and 15% of 15 year olds are obese. Possible reasons for people gaining weight could be, eating junk food and lack of exercise. Most importantly it is what we eat that directly affects our weight.
In Kidbrooke High School, before Jamie Oliver arrived and made his changes, the school canteen was serving massive proportions of junk food and hardly any vegetable which would have been thrown in the bin by the kids anyway. On the menu was food like fish fingers, chicken nuggets, turkey twizzlers and chips. All this food is reheated and brought out of boxes and none of it is fresh food. The fat content in this reheated food is very high and not good for the children and is making them constapated. Jamie was horrified by the fat content of certain foods and asked health experts what effect eating all this junk food would do to the childrens mental and physical health.
A poor diet has a negative effect on children’s health. Their concentration levels are affected by the bad foods and it makes them hyper so the teachers will be stressed and all of this can be changed by having a healthy diet. A nutritionist in episode one of the programme examined the food a student from Kidbrooke High school eats. She found out that there was a lack of if any Vitamin C in their diet and it is an important key for keeping a healthy immune system. The food content contained only a third of iron needed for a child’s develpment. The iron levels affect a child’s concentration and growth. The dietician from Durham hospital said that they were having to run constipation clinics for primary school children who have not been to the toilet for up to six weeks due to the lack of fruit and fibre in their diet which the parents don’t change.
Children can be addicted and fixed in their eating habits. Some children are unfamiliar with different foods like fresh fruit and vegetables, and didn’t even know that some common vegetables such as rhubarb even existed. Children will be less inclined to try something new if they do not know what it is they are trying. All kids are too familiar with some common fast food restaurants because off advertising and logos. The thought of taking away chocolate, chips, Turkey Twizzlers made children so upset that they cried, stopped using the canteen or got their friends to go to the local chippy or buy junk food for them. Some parents even passed burgers through the school fence so their kids did not have to eat Jamie’s school dinners.
Jamie’s strategies included, Banning junk food (which really didn’t go down well with the children) because the children would always choose junk food over any other food that was available, and hiding the food in the vegetables. Jamie managed to put seven types of vegetables in pasta sauces so the children would be eating them without knowing it. He also got children involved in the cooking of the food so they knew what they were eating. Jamie took the most resistant kids and put them in special groups and got them to make a salad with a dressing to see if they would eat it then. Jamie also showed the children what chicken nuggets were really made of and they were disgusted at what they saw which was gristle, chicken fat and cups of additive powder going into the mix.
In conclusion changing eating habits can be successful but it would take a big effort and lots of different tactics to win over the kids. They need to ban junk food in schools and get the kids eating the fresh food which is healthier for them, you need to get parents, schools and government must be on the same team to make the programme successful and Jamie has proven that with persistence and perseverance.

In my class I’ve been watching a TV program called Jamie Oliver’s school dinners which was filmed on channel 4 in 2005. This TV series was made so Jamie Oliver could try and change children`s eating habits at primary and secondary school. In this essay I will write about how Jamie went about trying to change their diets. During the time my class was watching this programme I realized how bad public school`s lunches actually are, I also though it was a very good programme.
Obesity in Britain is vastly becoming a major problem, school isn’t the only place where children are obese as 25% of adults in Britian are classed as obese. Nearly 10% of all six year olds and 15% of 15 year olds are classed as obese. There are a number of reasons why we have so many obese people, watching to much TV, playing to many computer games, not having the right equipment for sport or having a place to do sport, but in all one of the major factors of obesity is diet.
In kidbrooke high school, before Jamie Oliver came, the school canteen was serving a massive proportion of junk food. In kidbrooke the menu was fish fingers, chicken nuggets, hamburgers, chips and pizza etc. Their was no fresh fruit or vegetables in this menu and all of it contained a high percentage of fat and all this food was reheated. Burgers from Bernard Matthews are 19.8% fat whilst Turkey Twizzlers contain 21.2% fat which is more than the 10% maximum fat content recommend for processed meats under Scottish guidelines.
A poor diet with no protein or fresh fruit and vegetables will have a poor effect on children. There are a lot of effects of a poor dier and some of them are poor concentration, hyperactivity and constipation. Jamie talked to Ruth Ash, a nutritionist looked at one child from kidbroke and she found hardly any vitamin C in his diet which is compulsory for a healthy immune system she also found that the food only had a third of the iron needed for children’s development and this affects concentration. A dietician from Durham hospital said that they had to run constipation clinics because some kids hadn’t been to the toilet In 6 weeks because of lack of fruit and fibre in their diet. All these illnesses I have wrote out all go back to school meals.
It is a known fact that children are fixed to their diet and wouldn’t be willing to change it. A few kids didn’t even know what rhubarb and asparagus were and some kids were not willing to try some new food and would rather each the foods they see on TV such as Burger King or Pizza Hut. Most of the kids at the school hated that their beloved turkey twizzlers and burgers were being taken away and being replaced for healthier foods such as curry or salad. Some primary kids even went to the length of getting secondary kids to go and get them chips from the chippy.
Whilst Jamie was at the schools he banned junk food as the children would always choose it over Jamies healthy meals. He also managed to hide the vegetables inside their food such as he put seven different types of vegetables in pasta sauces and purees so that the children could eat healthier without even knowing it. His final attempt to get the less willing kids to eat his food was to get them to help him to make it.
In conclusion changing eating habits of kids can be a success but they need to target the likes of Mcdonalds and Pizza Hut to show kids how unhealthy they are. They also need to try and get guardians and parents involved and local authorities to make this a success. By watching that program I learnt that you can achieve something even when it seems impossible.

Hello all! Thank you for getting these to me. I trust that the rest of you are handing these in at school? The ones that I have here, I will print and mark. You may have to wait a little while as obviously I am not with you any more - and this will be the last of my marking for you - but I will post them back to the school along with your others, which I still have. Hope you are all well! Miss Davidson
