Just thought I'd mention my brother Craig is thoroughly depressing and if I'd read the book I would give insight. Otherwise we'll just say that genius runs through the family and Craigs idea was good.

Essay will be easy for you all.
All you need to realise is that Mr. Birling and Sheila both represent the themes that Priestley is trying to point out.
Mr. B - Represents that a 'me first' attitude does and will not succeed in the world. Selfishness, and capitalism will not save one from redemption
Sheila - Sheila believes that all should take responsibility, no matter whether the story was true or not. Priestley believed that we were all responsible as a society for each other. SHEILA IS PRIESTLEY'S MOUTHPIECE FOR STATING HIS VIEWS. He makes her a sympathetic character so we side with her views - AND BY EXTENSION, PRIESTLEY'S! It all makes sense!
Right?

If we don't take responsibility for helping and making sure everyone is looked after, then the world will not look after itself and everyone will die lonely and isolated and neglected deaths.

A reminder, guys - Paragraphs 1 & 2 complete for Monday, as well as beginning paragraph 3.
Remember, we're looking for CREDIT essays, so no 'I will be examining' or 'A play I have read'. Just get straight to the point!
I'd expect a few of you will have some Arthur questions as you go over section three this weekend. I'll try my best to answer them as quickly as I can.

I support Arthur as I believe in looking out for number one. Only joking. I love the fact that Sheila seems to take on the role of the parent and tries to educate her mother. I would prefer it if the 'Goole' arrived on stage with the opening line 'There's been a murder!' ;D

Well, Arthur's got a bit of a point, hasn't he. I mean, why should I be responsible for MCF's actions? I mean surely we can't be responsible for everybody? That's just not practical, is it?

3rd years - some reminders about your essays.
REMEMBER - 1. You are comparing Sheila and Arthur. You need to show how they were before and after the Inspector's visit. The important idea that comes out of this is that SHEILA HAS CHANGED AND ARTHUR HASN'T.
2. You should be thinking about what these characters represent with regards to Priestley's beliefs. That is the other part of the question you are answering. What does it mean if someone like Arthur doesn't learn? What does it mean for someone like Sheila to learn? What will happen to those who don't learn?
3. Finally, and perhaps most importantly - IF YOU PUT A QUOTE IN YOUR ESSAY, YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN WHAT IT SHOWS. IF YOU DON'T DO THIS, THERE IS NO POINT IN HAVING A QUOTATION!

Ah!
Easy, I always start with a definite statement like:
In conclusion, there can be no doubt that____________
I then answer whatever the question is. So if your question was something like
Compare and contrast the characters of Sheila and Mr Birling to examine how far they have changed their attitudes towards social responsibility.
Then my first line would be: In conclusion, there can be no doubt that J.B Priestley has effectively shown the difference between Sheila and Birling's attitude towards their social responsibility.
I would then sum up what their response was to the inspector and how they both changed or didn't change (basically summing up the MAIN points I have made in my essay).
LASTLY,
I would end on talking about Priestley's message to society.
for me, this is the bit that I think can make the most impact. Your last few lines are the last thing the examiner is going to read. They better drive home the fact that you have understood, appreciated, and have been moved by the message of the text.
So, you could end on:
Preistley's characterisation of Sheila as someone who has the ability to change from being a prejudiced and naive girl into someone who realises the responsibility she has towards others is a very powerful example for our society today. We too must be woken up by the message of the Inspector and ensure that we treat all of our Eva Smiths the way that fellow human beings should be treated; with compassion, respect and with love.
Do something like that and you'll knock em out!
